Howards Grove Middle School Named Exemplary Middle School by AWSA
This fall the Howards Grove Middle School was recognized by the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators as being an Exemplary Middle School. Howards Grove Middle School was given this honor because the math scores our students produced on the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam were in the top ten percent in the state! Fewer than 70 middle schools throughout the state were recognized as exemplary middle schools. Kudos to the students and staff on this achievement!
A statewide press release recognizing all Exemplary Middle Schools will be issued soon by the Department of Public Instruction. Howards Grove Middle School’s name will appear in an upcoming issue of the AWSA Update Bulletin and will also appear in the February Middle Level and High School Administrators Conference program.
The math curriculum throughout the district continues to be a focus as we work to align to the new Common Core State Standards. A K-12 team of math teachers has met several times to review curriculum, assessment, and instructional practices. The middle school’s recognition as an Exemplary Middle School is validation of the efforts of our teachers and the hard work by our students.

Message From The Superintendent Christopher Peterson
Happy New Year!
I hope this letter finds all of you doing well and ready to begin the second half of the school year.
It seems absurd to begin talking about it, but we traditionally start our planning for next school year in January. One of the first things we look at in our planning efforts is enrollment. Enrollment helps us determine class size, teacher assignments, and funding & budgets. This year will be no different. As we begin to look at our enrollment we have to recognize incoming Junior Kindergarten students and graduating seniors. In recent years, the number of graduates has been much higher than the number of incoming Junior Kindergarten students (a declining enrollment). One of the more difficult things to predict is the number of open enrollment students we will have. Open enrollment students are students who reside in another school district but apply to attend our school. These additions can help balance or eliminate the declining enrollment.
Currently open enrollment applications are accepted for a three week window in February. It is anticipated that the legislature will be changing this to a three month window. Updated information will be provided on the district website as it becomes available. Howards Grove has many things to offer including small class sizes, high test scores, high graduation rates, dual credits, updated facilities and updated technology (both of which are currently being completed through the Maintenance and Technology Referendum). Please help us promote Howards Grove as a great choice for those families looking to apply for open enrollment.
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) adopted new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in June of 2010. These new standards were developed in English/Language Arts and Mathematics for grades K-12, with an emphasis on college and career readiness. The CCSS were developed by the National Governor’s Council and the Council of Chief School Officers, with a coalition of other national education experts, through extensive national and international research. The CCSS have been adopted in almost all of the states.
Academic standards are important because they help ensure that all students, no matter where they live, are prepared for success in college and the workforce. They help set clear and consistent expectations for students, parents, and teachers; build your child’s knowledge and skills; and help set high goals for all students. The staff of the Howards Grove School District has been working with
both subject areas to first, develop an understanding and, second, develop our local curriculum based on the instructional focus of the CCSS. We began with Mathematics last school year and currently are working on Language Arts. Having clearly defined goals helps families and teachers work together to ensure that students succeed. Standards help parents and teachers know when students need extra assistance or when they need to be challenged even more. They also will help your child develop critical thinking skills that will prepare him or her for college and their career.
By now you should have received the brochure from the Howards Grove Education Foundation. The HGEF is a non-profit foundation designed to help support the school district. While the school district works closely with, and benefits from the HGEF, they are a completely separate organization. Please visit the HGEF website at http://www.hgeducationfoundation.org if you have any questions. There is also a link on the district website home page.
Over the past several months, the district has been updating all of the classrooms technologically. By this, I specifically mean Smart Boards. All of our classrooms will have Smart Board technology by the end of February. This technology will enhance the high quality instruction that already is occurring in our classrooms. Phase II of our Maintenance and Technology Referendum will be starting this summer. Phase I of the projects was the renovation of our Middle School. Phase II will include work at Northview Elementary and the High School. Some of the projects include: Updated energy efficient lighting, elementary boilers, repairing pavement at both sites, HVAC work, critical alarm sensors, Wi-Fi, digital controls, and the replacing the ’87 Northview roof to name a few. These projects are all part of the 3.4 million dollar referendum approved in April of 2011.
I have only mentioned a few of the many wonderful things happening within and around our school district. Please take few minutes to read through the remainder of the newsletter. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me, or any of the building administrators, if you have any questions.
Respectfully,
Christopher Peterson,
Superintendent of Schools |

What is RTI?
Keri Eilers, Intervention Specialist, (left) works with students individually.
RtI is an acronym for Response to Intervention. RtI has been the focus within our school district for the past two years. The concept of Response to Intervention is really quite simple. We test students with a short universal screening tool/test to get a baseline of reading and math ability. We test students for fluency (how well they read aloud), for reading comprehension, for math computation, and for math problem solving. The data from these universal screening tests is compiled and teams of teachers determine, based on data, which students would benefit from even more instruction in reading and math in an effort to bring those students “to target.” This increased time in reading and math is called a “double student is performing below a determined target, he or she gets dose during a set RtI time in the school day. Grade level teachers, or homeroom teachers used researched based teaching strategies intervention time to provide this additional instruction. Then, every weeks, we “progress monitor” the students receiving a double evaluate the gains made.
All three buildings in the district have implemented an intervention program, and we are seeing gains throughout for our students. This RtI effort has been led by Mrs. Teresa Keehn our school psychologist and special education director.

What's Cooking in Junior Kindergarten?
Gingerbread Night is for the whole family to work on a project and meet other Junior Kindergarten families.
Now entering our fifth year in existence, the Junior Kindergarten program is thriving! As a part of our program, we offer two events for families during the evening hours. Recently we held our first event of the school year, Gingerbread Night, and it was again received with excitement and enjoyment. The JK evening events provide a great opportunity for families to spend time with each other, as well as meet their child’s friends and their families.

As you walk past a Northview kindergarten classroom, in the month of December, there’s a good chance you’ll hear, “Run, run, as fast as you can. You can’t catch me, I’m the gingerbread man.” The kindergartners are learning about setting, character, and endings of stories as they explore many different versions of The Gingerbread Man story during their gingerbread unit. The gingerbread man versions that the classes explore include The Gingerbread Man, The Gingerbread Girl, The Gingerbread Baby, Gingerbread Friends, The Musubi Man (Hawaii’s Gingerbread Man), and The Gingerbread Cowboy. The good news is that the cunning fox does not always get to gobble up the tasty gingerbread cookie at the end of the story. Two of the stories, The Gingerbread Baby and Gingerbread Friends, are the beginning of a Jan Brett author study in the kindergarten classrooms.
The gingerbread unit encompasses the entire kindergarten curriculum as students act out the gingerbread man story and write about the different versions of the story. In math, they do gingerbread man estimating, patterning, graphing, problem solving and symmetry during the unit. Science includes using their senses to investigate the ingredients used in making gingerbread cookie dough, and learning about the spices ginger and cinnamon.
Of course, the best part of the unit is saved for last, as the students head to the cafeteria to measure, mix, stir and roll out their own gingerbread cookies. Family members and school staff help make the two day event a success by providing ingredients and volunteering their time. As gingerbread smells waft in the air, the students have a difficult time waiting until the next day to decorate their cookies. There is a buzz of excitement in the air on gingerbread cookie decorating day, as students frost and design their very own gingerbread cookies, just like they’ve been reading about. Gingerly and carefully, they carry home their heavily decorated gingerbread creations with pride to share with their families, and hope that none of them get away!

8th Grade Service Learning Project
Eighth grade students prepared for the Service Learning Project by discussing the organization and planning needed to successfully carry out a project to help others in their community. The purpose of the service learning project is to provide the students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills to addressing real-life concerns and make a positive contribution to the lives of others.
Working together to select, organize, and carry out a project helps students become more aware of the needs of others and realize the ways in which their actions can make a positive difference. As a result, they develop stronger self-confidence, a more caring attitude, and improved skills in planning and cooperation.
As a result of their planning, students chose to collect items needed to replenish important food and personal hygiene supplies for the local Salvation Army. Because of their hard work and desire to make this year’s collection even more successful than previous years, students experienced success. They collected a total of 1,932 items! This total was 771 items more than last year! Congratulations, 8th graders, on a job well done!

CAPP, Dual Credit Coursework, and Advanced Placement
The CAPP courses offered at HGHS are part of the College Advanced Placement Program at Lakeland College that allows our high school students to take rigorous courses in high school and receive college credit for those course offerings. In 2010-11 we kicked off our CAPP program with Lakeland College by offering Calculus in the spring of 2011 for college credit. This year, we are offering Calculus again and we added Physics I to our CAPP programming. We have expanded our CAPP programming for the 2012-13 school year to include Physics I, Physics II, Statistics and Probability, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. The advantage for our students, who elect to take CAPP courses at HGHS, will be the ability to take upper level courses on our campus from our instructors and receive college credit for those courses. In order for a course to be considered for the CAPP program, both the teacher’s qualifications (minimum of a Master’s degree) and the rigor of content of each of the CAPP courses offered to students are certified by Lakeland College using criteria which are designed to comply with North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) accreditation. Therefore, students who meet the course prerequisite, register, successfully complete, and pay for their CAPP courses receive transferable credit on both their HGHS transcript and a separate Lakeland College Transcript for the approved course work. On the first day of the course, students register with Lakeland College and pay a $300.00 fee to Lakeland College for the college credits (3 or 4 credits per course/depending on the course). Through our partnership with Lakeland College, HGHS has several courses approved to be part of the CAPP program for 2012-13 and we are looking at offering additional opportunities for our students in the future. |

Wisconsin Common Core State Standards, Course Revisions and New Courses at HGHS
At our November board meeting, several staff members presented course revisions and new course proposals for the 2012-13 school year at HGHS. The course additions and revisions were designed with the goal to help our students develop skills needed to be successful in the 21st Century and prepare them for Career and College Readiness and to meet the newly adopted Wisconsin Common Core State Standards.
The State of Wisconsin has adopted the Common Core State Standards in both Math and English/Language Arts for all school districts. “The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts, to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce.” (www.corestandards.org) Both of our Math and English departments have been working since the fall of 2010 to review, revise and align our current English and Math Curriculum with the State’s new Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
As a result of this standard and curriculum review, both of our departments have made recommendations that will increase the rigor in their content area and prepare our students for both career and college readiness. Our Math Department recommendations included taking our current one term (1/2 credit) courses of Trigonometry, Elementary Functions, and Intro to Statistics and Probability and combine them into two distinct semester (one credit) courses of Pre-Calculus and Statistics and Probability. The increased rigor and depth of the course content for these courses will allow our students, if they choose, to take both of these one credit courses for dual (CAPP) credit with Lakeland College.
In addition, our English department recommendation also included taking several of our distinct 1/2 credit term courses and combining them to create semester long, one credit courses. The recommendation will allow teachers to increase the rigor, go into greater depth of content and blend writing, language, reading and speaking skills during all four years of high school English. This change will no longer require a distinct speech course for a graduation requirement; however, it will increase speech to be taught in all four years of their high school curriculum.
The recommended course offerings for English will include:
Freshman – English 9
Sophomores – English 10
Juniors - English 11 (Contemporary) or English 11 (Classic)
Seniors – English 12 (College) or English 12 (Careers) or Advanced Placement English (2 credits)
As we evaluate the Common Core State Standards, our programming and curriculum at HGHS, we will continue to look at ways to create opportunities for our students to improve skill sets that will make them successful not only in an educational setting, but in their prospective career pathways as well.

Explore the World of Work While Still in High School
Howards Grove High School offers many ways for students to prepare for their future. Students can obtain work experience during the school year through one of several programs. The Youth Apprenticeship Program has students spend half of their school day in class at Howards Grove High School, half of their day working in a career area of their choice, and once a week attending (usually at night) a class related to their area of employment. This program is open to junior and senior students in the following areas: Automotive Technician, Drafting and Design, Finance, Health Care, Hospitality, Industrial Maintenance, Machine Tool, and Welding. Students complete an application and interview process during the spring semester before their junior or senior years. An informational meeting is tentatively planned for February 27th at 6:30 PM at Sheboygan Falls
High School.
Another option is for students to participate in a cooperative education or career internship program. In this program students typically find their own employment and are released one period of the day. The career internship coordinator meets with the employer and student on a regular basis to monitor the student’s progress and assist them in preparing for their future.
Anyone that is interested in either one of these programs should contact the Youth Apprenticeship and Career Internship Coordinator Ken Odekirk, or High School Guidance Counselor Dale Nenning for more information.

Pause for a Cause Information
The Howards Grove High School students, faculty and staff are set to hold their 4th annual charity fundraiser, “Pause for a Cause,” on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, from 4:00-8:00pm. A vote by the entire student body decided that the recipient of this year’s fundraising will again be The Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.
The Pause for a Cause evening will once again offer food, refreshments, a silent auction, children’s activities and a tournament for middle school and high school students, possibly dodge ball. A few new additions have been added this year. The Jazz Cabaret will be held during our event and we will also have student work, from a photography class, available for purchase.
Students and staff will run the evening’s events. Community members and area businesses are asked to donate food items and silent auction offerings. Last year, thanks to everyone’s efforts, we were able to raise over $5300 to benefit Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. The Children’s Hospital is having HGHS put on a plaque and mounted on a donor’s wall, since the high school has donated over $10,000 in the past few years. If you are interested in making a donation to help sponsor our event, please contact the high school office.

Howards Grove FFA Members start the 2011-2012 School Year off on A High Note
With the start of another school year, comes the start of another busy year for the Howards Grove FFA Chapter. FFA members started this year on a high note, by sending three members to this year’s Section Leadership Workshop in Kiel. Those that attended included Kendra, Amanda, and Crystal. Our chapter also participated in the first Adopt-A-Highway of the year on Saturday, September 25, 2011. Justin, Katelynn, Carmen, Kendra, Dale, Emily, and Amanda all volunteered a few hours of their time in order to clean the chapter’s stretch of Highway 32.
In October, six members went to Indianapolis to participate in this year’s National FFA Convention. These members consisted of Amanda, Kendra, Carmen, Derek, and Justin. During the course of the trip, members were able to tour various agricultural
highlights including Ball Seed
Company in Chicago and Not Just Popcorn in Indiana. Members were also encouraged to attend a variety of inspirational sessions throughout the course of the convention. Josh had the opportunity to perform with the National FFA Chorus, and Leeann received her American Degree. On October 11, the chapter was able to send a dairy judging team down to Madison to participate in this year’s Dairy Expo. The team consisted of Sean and Erica and Rachel. As October neared its end, FFA members worked with the FFA Alumni during the week of Halloween to provide a pumpkin decorating contest at the middle school. The chapter supplied pumpkins for each homeroom to decorate. Each pumpkin was to depict an agricultural theme. At the end of the week, FFA members judged the pumpkins and the winning homerooms were rewarded. In November, the chapter volunteered to ring bells at the Howards Grove Piggly Wiggly. Those involved included Emily, Kendra, Rachel, Sara, Erica, Katelynn, Gage, Justin, and Miranda Jost. The chapter sponsored a second annual Harvest for the Hungry Food Drive on December 5th through the 15th. Donations benefited Safe Harbor in Sheboygan.

Broiler chickens typically grow from hatching to a market weight of 7-8 pounds in about eight weeks. Students kept track of the amount of feed fed and the daily weight grain on their way to calculating the total cost of production, the pounds of feed to produce a pound of gain and the daily rate of gain.

Students Represent Howards Grove in St. Norbert College Honors Band
Emily and Ally did a marvelous job of representing Howards Grove Middle School in the seventh and eighth grade St. Norbert College Honors Band on Saturday, November 5th. Howards Grove Middle School was also well represented by eighth grader Nick Hanke, who took part in the ninth grade Honors Band. Howards Grove High School was extremely well represented by Sara, Carissa, Zach and Dan for the ninth grade Honors Band. Dr. Brian Silvey, Assistant Professor of Music Education at the University of Missouri, was this year’s clinician/composer for the seventh and eighth graders, while Dr. Michael Knight, the Director of Bands at St. Norbert, was the clinician/composer for the ninth graders. The composers worked with their groups during the day and then conducted the combined afternoon concert, which was a wonderful performance.

Howards Grove Fifth Graders Give Back to the Community
Fifth graders at Howards Grove Middle School took a little trip to the Boys and Girls Club to deliver presents ranging from needed supplies to gift cards for future needs. All three classes brought in gifts throughout the month of December. After lunch, on Friday, December 23rd, all 62 fifth graders and teachers walked to the Boys and Girls Club while singing carols along the way. It was exciting to see and feel the joy of giving back to the community. The Boys and Girls Club of Howards Grove has a wonderful connection with the fifth graders and we felt this would be a good opportunity to show our appreciation.

Northview General Music News
The hallways of Northview Elementary have been filled with music. The fourth grade general music students have been learning music concepts while playing classical guitars. The twenty-eight, 3/4 size classical style guitars were generously purchased by the PTO as yet another way for students to experience music. Reading music rhythms and melodies while plucking the first and second strings of the guitar, or while strumming a chord and singing along, has proven to be a rewarding learning experience/challenge for the students.
On December 11, the third grade general music students joined the high school choir and band in their Winter Music Concert, presented at the Stefanie Weill Center in Sheboygan. Mr. Zach Holzer (H.S. Choral Director) and Ms. Angie Houston (H.S. Band Director) graciously invited the students to collaborate in two music selections, as well as perform two music numbers of their own. The third grade students performed, in two-part harmony, songs entitled, “If I Could Have” and “Dodi Li.”
The third grade students have also begun learning how to play the recorder (a member of the woodwind family.) Recorders are introduced in the music curriculum during grades 3 and 4, and continue into middle school.
Grades K-2 continue to experience and learn set music concepts through: singing, dancing (movement), instrument playing, notation and reading. Also, all of the Northview music students presented an informal All-School Winter Sing-a-Long on December 23rd.
